Thread: SMS notifications: add email type

SMS notifications of voice mail are handy.

My mobile phone carrier provides email addresses for
each phone, in the form: <10d>@carrier.net

A text email to that Internet addresss appears on my
phone as an SMS message--without using any gateway
services or paying any fee.

I suggest adding email-type notification to the SMS Settings
page. My hunch is this would be extremely simple, because
the gateways use Internet transport.

Or, perhaps there's a way to 'fake' the SMS settings to serve
as email settings instead of gateway settings? Thanks, Dave

I guess, the desired result could be achieved by using "vmail to email" notification type... - you could just configure your extension to send a email to <10d>@carrier.net. The only possible problem here may be the fact that Quadro attaches the WAV-file to the mail... But maybe your mobile phone carrier will ignore the attachment and send you the text of email as SMS?

Can you try that, Dave?

If it wouldn't ignore the attachment, we may have to add new option in "VM to email" settings - to send only the notification, but not the attachment.Edited by: davrays

Sorry davrays---

But I thought the Epygi SMS message contained only a
text message describing a voicemail waiting for pickup.

I don't even believe my mobile phone can handle an
attachment (in this case, a .WAV file).

I use the Epygi voicemail to email service, and it appears
to work well. But I need an SMS message sent as an email
(with only text describing the waiting voicemail).

Thanks, Dave

Well, Dave, it seems we again misunderstood each other (the same as in some other topics

Of course, the Epygi SMS message contained only a text message.

Please confirm that the following is true (so I know that I understood you right): if you send an ordinary e-mail to email address "<somenumber>@carrier.net", you will receive on your cellphone a SMS containing the text of the e-mail. Is that right?

What I was suggesting, is the following:

configure the Quadro to send an e-mail notification to "<somenumber>@carrier.net". Notification consists of two parts: text message and attachment. Hopefully the attachment will be ignored, and the text will be sent to your cellphone as an SMS.

Yes, Dave--you completely understand me!

If I send an ordinary (text) email to email address:
<10d>@carrier.net
the mobile phone receives the text of the message.

I'll try your suggestion about the email notification
(which includes a .WAV attachment). But what I'm
asking for is an SMS message triggered by a new
voicemail which uses the email address format
above and not an SMS gateway.

This new option (the one you refer to) would appear
as an SMS message type on the correct Quadro page.

Thanks again, Dave

But if the above works, why re-create it?

Actually, I have often thought it would be useful if there were a tick box to disable attaching the wav file along with the email - for people who check their email on Blackberry type devices and don't want to burn through data usage on their mobile plan.

Because it puts the option in the proper group.

And because it avoids the possibility that some
mobile phone providers will have problems with
a large and non-functional attachment.

I wonder if any of the new crop of mobile phones
that are also MP3 players (but not Blackberry-type
devices) couldaccept a .WAV email attachment. Dave
